Curing lights are bought on a single number more often than any other piece of dental equipment: milliwatts per square centimetre. It is a useful number. It is not the whole picture, and a light chosen on irradiance alone can still under-cure restorations.
Wavelength coverage comes first
Camphorquinone, the most common photoinitiator, absorbs around 468 nm. Several modern materials use alternative initiators that absorb in the shorter violet range. A light with a single blue emitter will cure the first group well and may cure the second inconsistently. If your material list includes products with alternative initiators, broad-spectrum output is the relevant specification — not peak irradiance.
Beam uniformity beats peak output
A light can post an impressive average while delivering hot and cold zones across the tip. What matters at the restoration is the energy delivered across the whole surface being cured. Uniformity is the reason two lights with the same headline number can behave differently on a wide Class II.
Modes, and when they earn their place
- Standard: the mode most restorations are cured in; predictable and easy to protocol.
- High / turbo: shorter exposures at higher output. Useful, but heat generation rises — pulp protection and technique matter.
- Soft start / ramp: intended to moderate the rate of polymerisation early in the cure.
Most practices use one mode for almost everything. Choose the light whose default mode fits your protocol rather than one bought for a mode nobody will use.
The unglamorous details that decide daily use
Battery life across a full day, whether the light stays cool in the hand, how the tip is protected and disinfected between patients, and whether the unit is comfortable to angle in the posterior. These are what determine whether a light stays in the operatory or ends up in a drawer.
Verify, do not assume
Output falls over time as tips are scratched and batteries age. A periodic check with a radiometer is a five-second habit that prevents a slow, invisible decline in restoration quality.
